The latest jobs data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics paints a cautiously optimistic picture for the broader labor market, and a notably stronger one for the tech sector. While headlines focused on the U.S. adding 147,000 jobs overall in June, technology employment showed meaningful traction despite wider economic uncertainties and modest private sector growth.

Here’s a breakdown of the key takeaways, especially for those navigating hiring or careers in tech:
Tech Unemployment Falls Below 3%
After rising throughout much of 2025 and peaking in April at 3.5%, the tech unemployment rate fell to 2.8% in June, its lowest point so far this year. That’s a strong signal of sustained demand for technical talent. By comparison, the national unemployment rate dipped to 4.1% for the month, reaffirming that tech talent remains in high demand across sectors.
90,000 New Tech Jobs Added
According to analysis from CompTIA, companies added a net 90,000 tech workers to their ranks in June, cutting across industries from retail to finance to healthcare. This isn’t just about traditional tech companies; demand is coming from employers across the economy. Even as the tech sector itself reduced staffing by a net 7,256 roles (largely due to contraction in tech manufacturing), the overall tech labor force grew. These numbers confirm that while specific companies may be downsizing, the broader market continues to invest in technology capabilities.
Job Postings Point to Continued Momentum
The market for tech jobs remains active. In June alone, over 211,000 new tech job listings were posted, part of a total of 455,341 open tech roles nationwide.
Experience levels remain widely distributed:
21% of postings sought early-career talent (0–3 years)
30% targeted mid-level professionals (4–7 years)
17% called for seasoned experts (8+ years)
Strong Demand for Core Roles (Beyond AI)
Much of the conversation in tech this year has revolved around AI. But June’s numbers reveal that hiring isn’t limited to machine learning engineers or AI specialists.
Top in-demand roles include:
Software developers and engineers
Systems engineers and architects
Cybersecurity professionals
Network engineers
Tech support specialists
AI-related hiring is growing fast—job listings requiring AI skills jumped 153% year-over-year—but it remains part of a much broader story. As CompTIA’s Chief Research Officer Tim Herbert noted, "It’s worth pointing out there is more to tech hiring than AI."
Emerging Tech Hubs on the Rise
While cities like Washington, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, and San Jose led in total volume of postings, several non-traditional tech metros posted standout growth:
Providence (+21%)
San Antonio (+21%)
Baltimore (+14%)
Indianapolis (+14%)
These regional upticks suggest expanding opportunity across the U.S., not just in coastal hubs.
A Resilient Outlook for Tech Hiring
Despite continued restructuring by major enterprises and some softness in tech sector payrolls, the June jobs report shows underlying strength in the tech labor market. Growth in job postings, a drop in tech unemployment, and consistent hiring across disciplines paint a picture of stability (and even cautious optimism) for the second half of 2025.
